Consumers eager to be heard over the growing crowd of online product reviewers at Amazon and on restaurant review sites will exaggerate, often resulting in extreme reviews that readers should take with a grain of salt, according to a new study to be published in the Economic Journal. "When there are many reviewers, each reviewer has only a small influence on potential customers and their temptation to write extreme reviews becomes large," one researcher said.
