Nestle announced it has reached a deal to purchase Centroproizvod A.d. Co., a major Serbian food maker with products including confectionery, chocolate drinks, teas, soups, dressings, dry spices and seasonings. ConAgra has launched SafeGuard, a "pasteurization-like" system for ensuring the safety of raw flour through a natural heating process as well as checks and controls through the delivery chain. The consumer packaged goods segment is recovering, according to a benchmarking report from GMA and PwC, with shipments up 6% in 2010 to almost $124 billion. All 148 of the companies analyzed saw sales growth, and GMA President and CEO Pamela Bailey said one factor is that companies are using digital capabilities to improve marketing, innovation and operations. Private-label sales in supermarkets, drugstores and mass merchandisers rose nearly 2% in 2010 to reach a record $88.5 billion, according to the Private Label Manufacturers Association. The association said sales grew 2% in supermarkets and 5% in drugstores, but noted the report does not include sales in warehouse clubs, convenience stores, dollar stores and limited-assortment stores.  - P&G ad spending up 17.9% in 2010
Procter & Gamble spent $4.6 billion on U.S. advertising in 2010, a 17.9% increase over the $3.9 billion of the previous year. According to Ad Age, overall U.S. ad growth was up 8.8%, led by financial companies, which spent 29% more, and auto companies, which spent 28% more.
