- Specialty apparel and accessory stores booked May sales gains
While May retail sales declined overall, specialty apparel and accessories retailers gained 6% over the same period last year. “Though consumers are spending cautiously, we are not seeing them cut out new purchases completely, signaling there is a distinct appetite to spend if economic conditions let them,” said NRF's chief economist Jack Kleinhenz. Retail shrink is on the rise and cost the industry $37 billion last year, according to preliminary results of the National Retail Security Survey released yesterday at NRF’s 2011 Loss Prevention Conference. Richard Hollinger shared several harrowing statistics from the 124 companies who have responded to the survey.
