Quaker Oats in Danville, Ill., has donated snacks to summer youth programs for years, but now is teaming with local organizations to offer a free "Breakfast in the Park" program to provide nutritious meals and wellness activities for underserved children. Company employees and retirees are volunteering for the project, which also will include tours of the fire department's "safe house," bike-safety clinics, Zumba classes, and self-defense and anti-bullying activities. Alan Haberman didn't invent the modern bar code, but in the early 1970s he headed the committee of supermarket executives who chose the now-ubiquitous symbol and spent years convincing consumer product makers to adopt it as part of a push to cut overhead costs by increasing automation. Haberman, a Massachusetts grocery executive who started his career at Hills Supermarkets and went on to become president of Hills-Korvette Supermarkets and then CEO of Finast, died Sunday at age 81.  - More restaurant brands to expand to the frozen-food aisle
A handful of restaurant chains including Taco Bell, T.G.I. Friday's and Boston Market have been building their presence in the grocery store for years with branded frozen meals, and now more chains are looking to the freezer aisle as they seek to build sales and brand awareness. Industry watchers expect more fine-dining establishments to lend their name to frozen entrees, aimed at appealing to gourmet food fans who don't have the time or cash to dine out. - Laundry campaigns try a different spin
Laundry brands including Woolite and Era have begun offbeat campaigns aimed at bringing attention to a category that does not typically get much attention. Woolite ads directed by Rob Zombie resemble horror movies and intone "some detergents torture your clothes," while tongue-in-cheek ads for Era say the brand is "Chuck Norris approved." A study examining the connection between olive oil and stroke risk found that older people who regularly use olive oil were 41% less likely to have strokes. The lead author said the oil's properties could explain the result, but "it may be a substitution effect," meaning those who consumed more olive oil ingested smaller amounts of saturated fats.
