- Kingfisher to ramp up expansion in Britain
Kingfisher, the home-improvement retailer, said that along with seeking acquisition targets, it is also planning to create more than 1,200 jobs in Britain as it expands. The company reported a 24% surge in first-half profit. "Looking ahead, economic uncertainty throughout Europe is likely to impact consumer confidence, meaning conditions will remain challenging for retailers," said CEO Ian Cheshire. "However, our plans already assumed little help from our markets and I am confident we will continue to outperform, benefiting from our well-established program of self-help initiatives, international scale and breadth, and robust balance sheet." Thomas Jensen, founder of the Danish retailer Aesir, said that the company's limited-edition 18-carat gold phone is "not a play thing."
