 - Indiana state police push for legal fix for "hot truck" problem
Two months after a TV news expose of trucks stocked with perishable food stored at unsafe high temperatures and headed for Indiana's restaurants and food stores, state police say the problem is getting worse. The agency says a new federal law is needed to protect the public from illnesses related to improperly refrigerated food, since the trucks typically travel through several states on their routes. - Liquor companies release new digital-ad guidelines
The Distilled Spirits Council has released self-regulatory guidelines outlining what the liquor industry sees as appropriate marketing practices in the social media space. Among other things, the guidance requires spirits companies to make sure they are engaging only with consumers of drinking age before reaching out to them on social sites, and making sure that all marketing on blogs and other sites is clearly marked as being an advertisement. A review of study data showed moderate drinking raised the risk of colorectal cancer by 21% while heavy alcohol consumption (four or more drinks per day) increased it by 52%, French researchers reported in the Annals of Oncology. The report found that men who drank moderately were more at risk than women who did the same, and Asians who were heavy drinkers had a higher risk of colorectal cancer linked to alcohol consumption than did other ethnic groups. A Breast Cancer Fund survey of canned food at supermarkets found a level of bisphenol A, or BPA, in food packaging well below the amount considered safe by the government.
