- Karen Millen warns UK performance has slowed
Karen Millen, the fashion chain with nearly 100 stores in Britain and 120 overseas shops, has warned that its performance in the UK has been slowing. However, the retailer is expected to report a 15% jump in turnover in the year ending in February 2011. Since then, the company's performance has been "softer" in the UK, according to Chairman Derek Lovelock. - Harley-Davidson works to break into China
Dozens of cities in China have restrictions on two-wheel vehicles. Those rules are hindering Harley-Davidson's growth in China. "Regulations are a pain," said Calvin Chen, a Shanghai businessman who owns a Harley V-Rod Muscle. "There are many roads you can't ride on, and the rules differ from place to place." Harley is encouraging the Chinese and US governments to ease such restrictions. - Chile's Grupo SMU acquires store chain
Grupo SMU, which owns the No. 3 supermarket chain in Chile, has acquired Supermercados del Sur as it aims to ramp up its business in the competitive field. Details of the deal were not disclosed. Taobao Mall is making a strategy shift by allowing dozens of online retailers in China to open virtual shops on its site. Taobao Mall has traditionally focused on hosting outlets for Uniqlo, Dell and other major retail brands. "We never forbid other [business-to-consumer sites] to open storefronts on Taobao. But this is the first time we officially invite those [sites] to come here to work with us," said Taobao Mall President Daniel Zhang. Amazon is offering books in the Spanish, Catalan, Basque and Galician languages as it expands its European network to include Spain. "Amazon arrives in Spain," the site announced. "Now you can make your purchases in Spanish." The site includes DVDs, CDs and other goods, but its Kindle and electronic books are not yet available directly from the Spanish site.
