A General Mills executive said sales of its Yoplait Greek-style yogurt were up 50% in the first quarter of fiscal 2012, and are set to grow even faster now that more manufacturing capacity has been added. Spins, a company that tracks sales of natural products, found that sales of Fair Trade Certified items at groceries were up 87% in the second quarter compared with the first quarter. Schools are serving regular milk to improve student nutrition, but diet experts say the extra calories and sugar in flavored milk are not as big of a problem as many people think. Registered dietitian Keith Ayoob of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine says children get 98% of their sugar outside of school, and Diane Pratt-Heavner of the School Nutrition Association says that if children are more likely to drink milk because it's flavored, the extra sugar is OK. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., has asked the FDA to develop standards for imported juices and intensify inspections of such products from China and other countries. Schumer said more precautions are needed because children frequently drink fruit juices. The lawmaker's call is in response to a statement last week by Dr. Mehmet Oz on his show that some apple juice brands contain high levels of arsenic.
