Terry Duddy, chief executive officer at Home Retail, said that the company has investigated the significant decline in sales at its Argos stores, but has determined that its strategy is sound and it will not shut down any stores. "There were no eurekas ... It was a full and hard check. It was a hard reflection of where we were and it tells us that we believe that actually our strategy's right," Duddy said. Hennes & Mauritz reported a 17% drop in third-quarter profit, although it beat analysts' forecasts. "Gross margin is a relief," said Jan Meijer, an analyst at ING Commercial Banking. Tamara Mellon, founder and chief creative officer at Jimmy Choo, said the 50-store estimate is "conservative." "I've been looking at real estate only today. "More and more companies are doing business online," said Paul McElhone, director of the University of Alberta School of Retailing. "They're not only helping to take over a social media or e-commerce role in a company, they're actually educating the company on how important this is and what it should look like." NRF News | | | | - NRF backs quicker visas for foreign shoppers
US retailers could see a significant economic boost under legislation unveiled this week that would ease delays in the visa application process for Chinese, Indian and Brazilian citizens who want to shop in the United States. "Visitors from these rapidly developing countries are consumers who shop like it's Black Friday, but because their wait time for a visa has become intolerably long, they're taking their money elsewhere," NRF Senior Vice President for Government Relations David French said. "This legislation would bring tourists back to the U.S. to shop." Read more.
