- Missoni fever raises the specter of eBay resellers
Target's Missoni launch last week crashed the website and made it impossible for some customers to buy, but that didn't stop others who snagged goods and put them up for sale on eBay at higher prices the same day. Target says it won't limit purchases to deter resellers, but Saks, Abercrombie & Fitch and others put caps on orders. "Retailers are happy the demand is there, but the supply is limited, so they want to accommodate as many people as possible," said NRF's Joe LaRocca. Faux fur is hot across many price points this season, from Jennifer Lopez' line at Kohl's to $780 Prada boots, driven by a combination of manufacturers' need to cut costs and a desire to appeal to consumers' social conscience. Some industry analysts wonder whether luxury brands can win with synthetic fabrics. "Prada has to be thinking if it can pull off faux fur under the umbrella of its best in class luxury name, it's a financial win-win," said analyst Brian Sozzi.
