September 6, 2011 | News for the retail industry | | | | - GFS Marketplace expands with new Florida warehouse stores
GFS Marketplace has opened its first Florida store and has plans for several more in the state. The chain, which historically has supplied restaurants while also selling bulk items to consumers, operates 144 U.S. stores and, unlike other warehouse clubs, it doesn't charge a membership fee. The move comes as warehouse club sales are on the rise -- revenue jumped 4% to 370.8 billion last year, according to NRF data. Orlando Sentinel (Fla.) (9/4) - Fresh & Easy bets on small-format stores

"While we won't see retailers fully deck the halls until November, there is definite demand from their shoppers to bring out the holiday decor as early as September," said NRF spokeswoman Kathy Grannis. New York Post (9/4)
 - Survey: Retailers may take a conservative approach to holiday hiring: About two-thirds of retailers surveyed recently said they expect to hire about the same number of seasonal workers during the holidays as they did last year, despite forecasts for higher sales, according to a new survey.
