- Retail sales in Britain rose 0.6% in September
Consumers in the UK bought new laptops, video games and other products to give retail sales an unexpected boost last month. Sales volumes increased 0.6% in September, compared with the same period the previous year, according to the Office for National Statistics. Mercator, the largest food retailer in Slovenia, is awaiting approval from the Bosnian competition authority to purchase retail units from the country's Drvopromet. The sale includes 63 Bosnian shopping centres. "The strategic alliance is consistent with Mercator's strategy of growth and the vision of being the largest food and home products retailer in the region of southeastern Europe," according to a statement from Mercator, which is also up for sale. Trade unions are concerned that a proposal to split Carrefour's CEO functions could lead to a breakup of the retailing giant. Lawson, 7-Eleven and other major convenience stores in Japan are benefiting from the country's aging population, deflation and the fallout from the earthquake and tsunami earlier this year. Bonnie Brooks, chief executive officer at the Bay, appears to be in a race against time as she works to turn around the troubled retailer.
