- Mixed messages on holiday inventories
Retailers looking to have enough merchandise to satisfy holiday shoppers without overstocks that will lead to the need for deep discounts may be erring on the side of slightly higher inventories this season, according to a recent survey. However, ports and rail companies say shipments are down and retailers including Stage Stores and Charming Shoppes say they'll stock less this season. Forbes (10/12), The Wall Street Journal (tiered subscription model) (10/13) - Price increases had shoppers buying less, Levi's says
Shoppers at J.C. Penney, Sears and Kohl's bought fewer pairs of Levi's last quarter, after the company raised prices to offset higher cotton and commodity costs, said CEO Blake Jorgensen. The company turned to discounting to clear out fall styles, a move that, along with NRF's forecast of a modest 2.8% increase in holiday sales, has executives cautious about the upcoming season. Bloomberg (10/12) - Burberry executive says luxury spending remains strong
Stacey Cartwright, finance director at Burberry, said that the U.K. luxury goods company is not seeing a decline in demand despite the fragile economy. "No evidence of any slowdown ... Policy & Government Affairs | | | | | | - Lawmakers introduce bill to repeal swipe-fee reform
Retail organizations were outraged at the news Wednesday that U.S. Reps. Jason Chaffetz and Bill Owens have introduced a bill that would repeal the recently enacted Durbin Amendment, which capped the fees banks can charge on debit-card transactions. "Repealing these reforms sends a message that anti-competitive, price-fixing behavior on the part of the country's biggest banks is acceptable," said NRF general counsel Mallory Duncan.
