Global retail industry news | | - Retail sales in Canada rose more than expected in August
Economists said that the 0.5% increase in retail sales in Canada in August put the economy on track for growth in the third quarter. Analysts had expected a 0.3% rise. "The August numbers are admirable given the headwinds that included a plunging stock market and drop in consumer confidence to the lowest level in two years," according to BMO Capital Markets economist Robert Kavcic. "Thanks to a strong handoff in June and July, the Canadian economy still looks to have grown at about a 2% pace in the third quarter, bouncing back from Q2's mild contraction." "Although wider economic conditions mean that the short-term outlook for retail spending remains uncertain, we remain confident of our ability to grow our store network, deliver like-for-like sales growth and improve gross margins," Birtles said.
