Canada's retailers shouldn't shoulder all the blame for the fact that consumers there pay more for goods than their US counterparts, according to Retail Council of Canada president Diane Brisebois, who testified before the Senate Tuesday. Outdated import duties imposed by the government and suppliers' practice of charging Canadian retailers up to 50% more than they do in the US are largely behind the higher prices, she said. - Primark pushes on with Europe growth plans
UK-based cheap-chic fashion retailer Primark, one of the country's few retailers to flourish during the economic downturn, is moving ahead with aggressive Eurozone expansion plans, said parent Associated British Foods. The company reported a 15% jump in revenue in the six months ending March 4, largely fueled by new store openings and strong performance at stores in Spain, Germany, Portugal and the Netherlands.
