Canadian apparel brand Joe Fresh has a four-year deal to open 1,000-to-2,500-square-foot shops inside 683 J.C. Penney stores, an agreement that came together quickly after the two companies began talks four months ago, said founder Joseph Mimran. Sweden-based apparel chain H&M has opened several new stores in Florida and Texas in the past year, as part of a bigger plan to expand its presence in the U.S., particularly in the West, Southwest, Southeast and South Central regions, the company said. H&M, which opened its first U.S. store in New York City 12 years ago, also expects to focus much of its upcoming growth on smaller markets. Wal-Mart joined Target and NRF in opposing a proposed settlement in a spate of lawsuits against MasterCard, Visa and 13 big banks over the processing fees retailers pay on credit card transactions. The company urged retailers who are a party to the case to reject the settlement, saying provisions prohibiting future lawsuits against Visa and MasterCard "would require merchants to broadly waive their rights to take action against the credit card networks for detrimental conduct or acts." Initiatives including nonprofit Freshmobile, a mobile grocery operated by Fresh Madison Market in Wisconsin, are bringing fresh food to underserved neighborhoods.
