  • Unions oppose Wal-Mart's entry into South Africa
Wal-Mart Stores is facing opposition from a couple of unions in South Africa as it strives to acquire Massmart. The unions criticised the US company's labour and procurement records. "We call on urgent national action from government to investigate this hostile move by Wal-Mart. Companies whose practice it is to abuse workers' rights are not welcome in SA," according to the Western Cape branch of the Congress of South African Trade Unions. • CBI reports strongest UK retail sales growth since 2004
The Confederation of British Industry reported that retail sales in the UK were much higher than expected in September, with 60% of retailers noting an increase in sales volumes. Ian McCafferty, chief economic adviser at CBI, said merchants benefited from the changing seasons, but warned that consumer spending is likely to drop next year. "Retailers expect sales growth to continue next month and, as we get closer to January, sales will be helped by households seeking to beat the VAT rise," McCafferty said. "However, weak prospects for take-home pay mean that consumer spending is likely to be fairly restrained in 2011." The Guardian (London) (28 Sep.) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

The watchdog said the supermarkets tried to fool shoppers with large "great value" packages that were less of a value than smaller packages. ASDA and Sainsbury's blamed human error and said the prices have been changed. Telegraph (London) (29 Sep.) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
