  • Macy's is increasing its seasonal staff this year
    Macy's says it expects same-store sales to grow 3% to 3.5% in the second half of fiscal 2010, and it plans to add 65,000 staff this holiday season, an increase from previous holidays. Nationwide, retailers are slated to increase their hiring, adding between 550,000 and 650,000 workers this holiday season, said Chicago outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Chains across the board plan to add at least some workers, including Toys R Us, which expects to hire 10,000 to staff 600 temporary stores.     Blockbuster filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection early today, after hammering out an agreement with creditors that is expected to erase about $900 million in debt from the struggling video-rental chain's books.   • NRF: Americans won't fear Halloween spending
    Consumers are expected to spend $5.8 billion on costumes, candy, decorations and other Halloween goodies this year, with average per-person spending slated to increase $10 over last year, according to a new report from NRF and BIGresearch. The report also reveals that 40% of adults plan to dress up for Halloween this year, up from 33% in 2009.
