  • Why Groupon built a big call center in downtown Chicago
Social-commerce giant Groupon is only two years old, but it already has a global workforce of about 5,000 -- and 20% of those are working in the firm's customer-service division. So far, managers have resisted the urge to cut costs by offshoring its call centers, saying that it's more important to have workers who understand and believe in the company's culture. "Maybe having a 1,000-person call center in downtown Chicago is not smart," says departmental chief Joe Harrow. "We haven't done the math yet. When we do, we'll ask how we can make this economical without costing us our culture." Advertising Age (tiered subscription model) (3/1) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • AT&T details plan to jump into daily deals
AT&T plans to launch a Groupon-like daily deal service through its YP.com online directory in the next few months, aiming to capitalize on a growing trend. The wireless carrier hopes its substantial network of local salespeople and advertisers will give it a leg up against a fast-growing field of competitors ranging from pure-play daily deal sites, such as Groupon and LivingSocial, to industry-specific sites such as Yelp and Travelzoo that recently have expanded to include group-buying.
