  • Retired Neiman Marcus CEO keeps his hand in the luxury game
Nurturing relationships with aspirational shoppers is vital for luxury retailers looking to attract the next generation of big spenders, retired Neiman Marcus CEO and Chairman Burt Tansky told students this week at the Luxury Education Foundation's "Conversations on Luxury" at Columbia University Business School. Tansky also offered a long list of predictions about the luxury market, including his belief that smaller Chinese cities will provide new opportunities for designers. • Drugstore.com acquisition will speed up Walgreen's online growth
At first glance it might seem that $429 million is a hefty price for Walgreen to pay to acquire Drugstore.com, but the move makes sense from a competitive aspect, writes John Jannarone. Acquiring the online drugstore that already sells 60,000 products and boasts nearly 4 million monthly visitors is faster than trying to build a similar store in-house, at a time when large rivals including Amazon are rapidly ramping up their sales of non-media offerings. • Retailers find shoppers see Easter as the start of spring
Easter may be a religious holiday, but for many consumers it also symbolizes the start of spring -- along with spring shopping. Americans spent an average of $19 on spring clothing while shopping for Easter candy and food last year, according to NRF figures. "We've found that millions of Americans head out every spring to buy not only Easter-related products, but to buy new spring apparel," said NRF spokeswoman Kathy Grannis. • Retailers expect uptick when taxpayers start spending refunds
About 42% of U.S. consumers plan to bank their tax refund checks this year, according to an NRF survey, but a sizeable number will spend at local retail stores. "Some people will even come in early and plan how to spend their refund," said Ronnie Varner, whose Appliance Land store in Martinez, Ga., typically sees an increase in sales this time of year. • Private labels' market share will double, Rabobank says
Rabobank predicted in a report that private-label products will make up half of the packaged-food market within 15 years, as their market share doubles worldwide. "Indirectly, the effects of the recession will fuel further private-label expansion across the globe for years to come," wrote Sebastiaan Schreijen, associate director of processed food and retail for Rabobank. • Bruegger's CEO discusses multibrand strategy
Vermont-based Bruegger's was a struggling 20-year-old bagel chain when Sun Capital Partners acquired it in 2003. The new owners turned things around, and last week's sale to the American arm of Paris-based Groupe Le Duff makes the brand part of one of the world's largest bakery cafe companies and brings key opportunities for co-branding stores in markets where it makes sense, CEO Jim Greco said. "The multibrand strategy is about having the right brand in the right market," he said. SmartBrief/SmartBlog on Restaurants (3/25) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
