  • ALDI leads the way on city stores
While chains including Wal-Mart Stores and Target are only starting to open small-format stores in a big city, discount retailer ALDI opened such a store last month in New York City and is set to open another in the Bronx by year's end. "They're not only doing the small format more rapidly, but they're getting into the urban areas more rapidly than either Wal-Mart Express or the city Targets," said Craig Johnson, president of consultancy Customer Growth Partners. • Korean apparel maker brings jobs and hope to Haiti
Korean garment manufacturer Sae-A has invested $78 million to build a new facility in Haiti, which will include the island nation's first knit and dyeing mill. The project by the major supplier to U.S. chains including Wal-Mart, Target and Kohl's, will anchor a new industrial park slated to create 20,000 new jobs for struggling Haitian workers. "This is going to change our community. This shows that Haiti is prepared to do business with the world, and it's OK to do business with Haiti,'' said Louicot Alexandre, president of the chamber of commerce for Northeast Haiti.   Retail trends

  • Evolving trends change the face of Southern California retail
The recession, combined with changing shopping trends and new, lower-priced competitors ranging from fast-fashion chains such as Forever 21 to online merchants such as Zappos.com, have led to the closing of scores of fashion and apparel stores in and around Los Angeles, where people tend to dress casually. "People realized that they couldn't spend $60 on a T-shirt or $100 on sweats, and stores like Forever 21 and H&M did really well because they can do that really cheap," said Camille Joseph-Jordan, manager of the boutique Milk. • Signs that your brand may be in need of a makeover
Rebranding can be painful and scary, but it's often a necessary undertaking for companies whose fortunes have taken a turn for the worse. Marketing consultant and rebranding expert Ken Schmidt, credited with the successful image makeover of Harley-Davidson in the 1990s, says sudden high employee turnover, increases in customer complaints and declining average sales can all be early warning signs of a brand that's going stale. • Michigan governor ends unpopular retail pricing requirement
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder signed a bill Tuesday to end a decades-long state law requiring retailers to put individual price tags or stickers on almost every item they sell. Snyder, whose first job as a teenager was pricing products at a local grocery store, found support for the move from regional grocery chains such as Mejier that say the move will make it easier to compete with big national players including Costco and Sam's Club.
