Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack seems to be politicizing the system for approving biotech alfalfa and other bioengineered crops by seeking comments from biotech critics and activists on how to attach conditions or restrictions to approvals of such crops, according to this Wall Street Journal opinion piece. Salmonella contamination in more than 15 states may have originated in alfalfa sprouts from Tiny Greens Organic Farm in Illinois, the Food and Drug Administration said. Federal and state regulators said they have been working with the farm, which supplies Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches, to curb the outbreak. Many of the 89 people who have fallen sick are Illinois residents who ate at the sandwich chain, which has temporarily stopped serving sprouts in that state.
