General Mills said that because of higher commodity costs, it will raise prices on hot snacks, frozen vegetables and refrigerated baked goods starting Jan. 3. The Agriculture Department is thinking of adding planting restrictions to approvals of biotech alfalfa and other bioengineered crops to address consumers' concerns about the technology. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the plan aims to satisfy both organic farmers and those who plant biotech crops in an effort to avoid lawsuits that could affect food production. Russell Williams, a director at the American Farm Bureau Federation, said farmers are likely to face unnecessary requirements if the agency decides to impose the restrictions on biotech crops.
