A Maine feminine-care plant is the first Procter & Gamble facility in North America to become "zero waste to landfill." The designation means all the waste produced by the plant is turned over to outside partners, who recycle it or convert it to energy. The company has eight such plants in Belgium, Hungary, Italy and the U.K.. It hopes to reduce manufacturing waste to less than 0.5% by 2020. Personal-care product companies may have to discount cosmetics and fragrances to boost demand. Consumers report that they will spend less on makeup and perfume and more on oral, skin and hair-care products. The frugal trend discovered in an AlixPartners survey about 2011 demand for personal-care products has one exception: The 18-to-34-year-old category reported plans to spend more across the board.
