Flavored carbonated sodas are expected to surpass colas in sales by 2015, said PepsiCo Americas CEO Al Carey. He also noted that he expects the majority of growth in the U.S. to come from the Hispanic market over the next decade and that his company is focused on developing beverages that cater to Latino tastes. "Latinos are going to be 60% of the total [liquid refreshment beverages] growth in North America. You'd better be Latino focused," he said at a conference in Paris this week. In a survey by Acosta Sales & Marketing, 26% of consumers reported making fewer routine shopping trips this year than last, apparently because of higher gas prices. The survey also found that consumers' monthly grocery bill has increased 11%, mostly because of higher food prices. Fifty-five percent said they buy more sale items, while the buy-one-get-one-free discount is most popular with shoppers. Pepsi is partnering with Billboard to sponsor the Summer Beats Concert Series as part of Pepsi's worldwide "Live for Now" campaign. The series begins with a surprise performance in Los Angeles on June 26. - Wal-Mart expands Neighborhood Market concept to Colo.
Wal-Mart Stores is opening five Neighborhood Market locations this month in Denver, the first in Colorado. The concept is smaller than the retailer's supercenter and more closely resembles a traditional grocery, with a bakery, meat counter, deli and fresh-produce section. Each of the five locations is in an existing building, and neighboring businesses said the stores will generate more foot traffic and revitalize the shopping centers where they are located. Kellogg's is seeking to stress the health benefits of eating cereal for breakfast with its new research compilation "Cereal: the Complete Story" that emphasizes research showing that people who eat cereal are associated with lower risk factors for disease and that children who eat cereal for breakfast weigh less on average than kids who skip breakfast.
