- Changing shopping trends shift the UK retail mix
About 20% of UK retail spending is expected to be done online by 2020, a trend that's shifting the focus of many brick-and-mortar retailers to new add perks and experiences consumers can't find online, says mall developer Land Securities. "With a good transactional website, a retailer really only needs 100 stores to cover the UK. This means that some of the secondary town centres will be under immense pressure," said Lester Hampson, head of retail development. McDonald's will open its biggest-ever restaurant for six weeks this summer, a two-story chalet in the Olympic Park that will be prepared to serve 1,200 customers an hour.  - Tmall aims to own online fashion sales in China
China's business-to-consumer e-commerce site Tmall, spun off from Taobao last year by parent Alibaba, aims to become the country's top online fashion seller. The site boasts offerings from a slew of global brands including Gap, Uniqlo and Levi's, and sales are on track to double this year compared to 2011, the company says. - Report: China, Brazil take top global e-commerce spots
China ranked first on a list of the world's emerging e-commerce market in a new report from A.T. Kearney, which evaluated countries based on online market attractiveness, online infrastructure, digital laws and other retail development criteria. "Our greatest surprise was how well developed many of these markets were already in e-commerce," said Hana Ben-Shabat, partner at A.T. Kearney. Kearney. - Officials are burying their heads in the sand, say ostrich farmers
A series of bird-flu outbreaks has led to a ban on ostrich-meat exports from South Africa, which supplies 70% of the world's demand and counts chains including Carrefour, Aldi and Netto stores as its customers. Hundreds of farms could be pushed into bankruptcy by the ban, which industry leaders say is based on guesswork rather than good science. "I'm very concerned about the future of the industry," says Saag Jonker, one of the world's biggest ostrich farmers.
