  • Stores dazzle shoppers with DJs, free champagne
Upscale department stores and luxury merchants have long understood the power of the "wow" factor while discounters focus largely on low prices with no frills. Merchants in the middle are taking a page from their pricier peers to bring in shoppers this season, with high-end perks such as free champagne at Ann Taylor. "Shoppers are attracted to stores for their merchandise, but also for excitement and enjoyment of the experience," said Macy's Vice President Holly Thomas. • Bricks-and-mortar retailers embrace data gathering
Brick-and-mortar retailers, envious of their online peers' access to massive amounts of data on consumer behavior, are finding ways to catch up, including using security cameras to track shoppers' in-store activities. • Survey: Most holiday shoppers have more than half of their shopping to complete
Over the next few weeks, millions of Americans will visit stores and websites in droves – some for the first time all holiday season – to complete their holiday shopping lists. According to NRF survey results released today, as of the second week in December, the average person has completed 47% of their shopping. "For consumers, the holiday season is more of a marathon than a sprint -- typically starting the season strong, pacing themselves in the middle and gearing up again in the final stretch, this is a trend retailers expect every year," said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay. • Retail container traffic to be up slightly in December as retailers finish holiday season
Import cargo volume at the nation's major retail container ports should be up 0.3% in December compared with the same month last year as retailers head to the finish line of the holiday shopping season, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released by NRF. "The uptick we're expecting for December isn't large at all but it comes after several months where retailers had reduced their imports from last year, so it's a positive sign by comparison," NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan Gold said. • Chipotle CEO pushes Congress on cleaner food
Chipotle founder and CEO Steve Ells urged Congress in a briefing Tuesday to end the overuse of antibiotics in America's meat supply. The 1,200-unit fast-casual burrito chain serves only antibiotic- and hormone-free meats; increased demand coupled with legislation would help spur more production of "clean" meat, Ells said.
