  • The one question you should ask every potential hire
To identify top talent, it's worth asking potential hires about who shaped and guided them as they grew up, writes former Microsoft Chief Operating Officer Bob Herbold. Candidates' answers usually reveal a great deal about their self-confidence, work ethic and sense of personal responsibility. "Talent is everything, so you need to equip yourself with a powerful arsenal of questions for identifying top candidates," Herbold writes. • The changing face of a successful sales leader
A number of skills are necessary for leadership success, including being able to collaborate and to foster an environment that promotes innovation, according to a Fortune interview last month with IBM's Randy MacDonald. To help your sales leaders master such skills, it's important to first realize that some people may not be naturally talented in these areas, writes Richard Ruff of Sales Horizons. Getting every department involved in building leadership talent can help, he writes. SalesTrainingConnection.com (12/7) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Economists' growth forecast is contingent on political, global events
Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal predict a 2.3% expansion for the U.S. economy in 2012, but that forecast is contingent on certain political and global events falling into place, Phil Izzo writes. Most of the 54 economists surveyed, 88%, say a payroll tax cut extension will be made by the end of this year, and 56% say unemployment benefits will be extended. Sixty percent of respondents predict that Europe will resolve its financial crisis. Without those actions, growth would be slower, Izzo writes. • Holiday shopping at airports: No taxes, normal prices
Gone are the days when airport shops offered lousy variety and even lousier prices. Today, it's not farfetched to do your holiday shopping there. "We have true street pricing here, which means the price at the airport is the same price you'll find off-airport. Another big bonus is that there is no sales tax," said Walt Froman, senior manager of concessions, marketing and operations at Portland International Airport in Oregon.
