Bed, Bath & Beyond will acquire specialty retailer Cost Plus, which operates Cost Plus World Markets and Cost Plus Imports, for $550 million or $22 per share. Cost Plus proved attractive because its stores carry merchandise that can't be found anywhere else and it has access to suppliers in regions where Bed, Bath & Beyond isn't firmly established, said CFO Gene Castagna. Gap-owned online fashion and accessories retailer Piperlime will add a brick-and-mortar channel with the opening of its first store in New York City this fall, the company said Wednesday. About 90% of Americans plan to celebrate Mother's Day this weekend, spending an average of $152 on meals, cards and gift lists that prominently feature iPads and other gadgets, according to an NRF survey by BIGresearch.
