- UK retail sales fall in April amid wet weather, economic woes
UK retail sales declined 2.3% in April, the biggest drop in more than two years, as rainy weather and a gloomy economic outlook dampened sales of apparel, footwear, gardening products and other goods. "The underlying picture is sluggish," said Ross Walker, chief UK economist at Royal Bank of Scotland Group in London. "Employment remains fragile and wage growth weak." Private labels and store brands accounted for 54% of new products introduced at grocery stores in 2011, the first time so-called "own labels" have introduced more new items than big-name brands, according to Mintel. The research also found that 57% of consumers say own-label goods are better than they used to be and 52% prefer them to premium brands. - Asia's retail rent growth slows with merchants' expansion plans
Europe's economic troubles and slowing retail sales growth in Asia have some merchants putting their expansion plans on hold, resulting in a slowdown in the rise of retail rents in the Asia-Pacific region, according to commercial real-estate broker CBRE Group. Resistance to high rents and deals on leases in newly constructed projects also contributed to the slowdown, the report said. - UK ad officials find Amazon's one-day claims misleading
The UK's Advertising Standards Authority has found that Amazon Prime's promise of one-day delivery is misleading after customer complaints that they were left waiting for their orders after subscribing to the service. Australian fashion retailer Cotton On has launched a new feature called Try On Your Sound at a store near Brisbane, using RFID technology to select and play music chosen to go with the style of jeans the shopper is trying on.
