Technology has hampered the shopkeeper's ability to be the knowledge source of what customers like and don't like, but social media is bringing that intimacy back to retail again, writes Clara Shih. Facebook Marketing Conference speakers, who included David Fischer, Mike Hoefflinger and Chris Cox of Facebook, say the social net's Timeline feature can be used to restore the human touch between the customer and the store, and even big-box giants such as Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Quiznos can regain local traction by using Facebook pages.
