  • Target to take up residence in historic Chicago building
Target will open its first urban-format store in Chicago next year, in the same space where Carson Pirie Scott & Co. operated its flagship department store for more than a century. The 54,000-square-foot store will be smaller than Target's suburban stores and will stock fresh foods, clothing and essential items aimed at the city's apartment dwellers. • Retailers reap returns from free-sample investments
Supermarket chains and discount warehouse companies have ramped up their free samples in recent years, investing in in-house or third-party teams to run sampling programs. Food brands are happy to share the cost. The reason? Free samples help consumers try -- and often buy -- new products they might be reluctant to spend on otherwise. • Home Depot and Lowe's to staff up for spring
Home Depot plans to add about 60,000 seasonal staffers, and Lowe's expects to beef up its ranks by 50,000 temporary workers, as the home-improvement chains gear up for the busy spring season. Warmer weather heralds the return of homeowners in search of lawn-care products, patio furniture, grills and other outdoor items. • Shoppers make the shift to "bricks-and-mobile"
A small-but-growing band of consumers increasingly is incorporating smartphones into their shopping trips, using the gadgets to scan bar codes, read product reviews and comparison shop. Industry watchers say it's only the beginning. "The customers are going to do whatever they want," said Home Depot's Cara Kinzey at last month's NRF convention. "Everybody will have that expectation that they can talk on their phone or do things on their phone in your stores. And we have to prepare for it." "I didn't want to start a warehouse. That would mean hiring a lot of people—increasing my cost and decreasing my profit. FBA was my solution." John Liao, owner, QuickAutoHouse.
