Retail sales rose 0.6% in September, according to a Commerce Department report released Friday. Sales beat analysts' expectations and offered merchants new hopes for the holiday season. As retailers closed the books on the summer selling season and looked ahead to the all-important holidays, September sales gains were better than expected. According to NRF, September retail industry sales (which exclude automobiles, gas stations, and restaurants) increased 0.4% seasonally adjusted over August and 4.3% unadjusted over last year. Franchise Brands submitted the winning bid in a bankruptcy court auction and will acquire the 200-store Seattle-based Taco Del Mar chain for $3.25 million.
