Consumers shifted their clothes shopping from discount chains to department stores, specialty shops and outlets in the 12 months ending April 30, leading to a decline in apparel market share from 21.2% to 19.3%, according to a new report from NPD Group. The Digital Sensoria project underway at Brunel University in London is creating new online shopping applications that aim to remove barriers to online clothes shopping. Touchscreen apps promise animated images that present fabrics and movement in a more lifelike way, and researchers are working on a version of Facebook's "Like" button that would measure users' response to certain fabrics.
