Jo Ann Emerson, R-Mo., has proposed requiring a cost-benefit analysis before voluntary guidelines can go into effect for food ads aimed at children, saying the standards "would lead to extraordinary pressure from the federal government." Other Republican lawmakers say the guidelines overreach by covering too many foods, including healthy ones such as whole wheat bread. The Federal Trade Commission, which developed the voluntary rules with the FDA and other agencies, is trying to address what it says are myths about the guidelines and says that noncompliance would not have legal consequences. Green tea lowers LDL, or "bad," cholesterol by about 2% but has no effect on HDL, or "good," cholesterol, according to an analysis of trial data by researchers at China's Peking Union Medical College. The report, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, says chemicals called catechins reduce absorption of cholesterol in the gut. Researchers cautioned that while green tea can be part of a healthy diet, it should not replace medication in people who have high cholesterol.
