A coalition of food companies including General Mills, ConAgra and Kellogg today are planning to introduce their own guidelines for advertising their products to children. The coalition's proposal would limit advertising to food that meets specific nutritional guidelines, and it is less stringent than a government proposal. PepsiCo in Canada is introducing recycled bottles for its 7UP and will likely expand use of the bottles to other drinks and regions. The bottles will look and feel like the current ones but will be the first in North America made entirely of recycled PET plastic to be used for carbonated drinks. Across the U.S., nonprofit groups such as the Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture in Alexandria, Va., are filling a need to provide food and vegetables in underserved areas. Retailers including Rite Aid, Walgreens and Duane Reade also have begun selling fruit and other fresh foods in urban locations as the issue has gained attention. Launches of products containing almonds are up 30% since last year, said Mintel, and almonds are the nuts used most often in launches around the world. Procter & Gamble said it has responded to consumer concerns and improved its Pampers Cruisers line with more softness and a longer absorbent patch. A modified-fat diet, in which saturated fat is replaced with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, may be better than a low-fat diet for heart health, a new review indicates.
