Known best for its plain white T-shirts, Hanesbrands is getting some color, via a new graphic T-shirt division. The move comes as Hanes is looking for fresh areas of growth. The company believes it can use its industry position to outdo competition in the decorated tee sector with its Hanes Ink division, but the company notes that the move is not without risks. - L.A. retailers gear up for Carmageddon
Freeway improvement projects will close 14 miles of I-405, a move that will have affect traffic to several Los Angeles-area malls including Valencia Towne Center and Topanga Plaza, while potentially driving foot traffic to local retailers as residents stay closer to home. Retailers are advised to inform employees and prepare for the possibility that some may have a tough time making it to work this weekend. CB Richard Ellis research shows that 20.5 million square feet of new space in European shopping centers was built in 2010. That represents a 36% drop from 2009, which was down 30% from the previous year. Analysts are split over whether there is enough retail space to satisfy demand, particularly as U.S. retailers aim to expand past their domestic market. "A shortage of new shopping centers being built in Europe restricted the expansion plans of retailers in 2010," according to CBRE. - Survey: Retailers plan to invest in IT
Almost half the retail executives responding to a recent KPMG survey said that they plan to spend on IT next year, largely on analytical tools that will improve growth, expansion and planning. The survey also found that 72% of the retailers have a great deal of cash on hand, which will allow them to invest in new technology.
