- Hiring outside of the box
Just as retailers are looking further afield for customers, they also need to look beyond the familiar when it comes to hiring, as J.C. Penney did when it hired Apple executive Ron Johnson as its new CEO, writes Kate Benson, a founding partner of executive search firm Martens & Heads. "You're not surprised that your customer buys her shoes at Neiman Marcus, but then goes to Target to buy her bathing suits -- why can't you be that open when hiring new employees?" - Survey: Majority of adults say couponing is a hot trend
Coupons have been around for more than 100 years, but the combination of digital offerings online and a slow economy that has consumers hunting high and low for bargains is fueling the sport of extreme couponing, writes NRF's Kathy Grannis. A recent survey by BIGresearch revealed 60% of adults say couponing is a hot trend, and more than two-thirds said coupons influence their grocery buying decisions. - As local customers disappear, a store shifts gears
Many small businesses have faced shrinking markets, but for Dana and Tammy Sparkes, owners of a convenience store in Empire, Nev., the problem is especially acute. Empire is literally disappearing due to a plant closure by drywall maker United States Gypsum, which practically owned the town. As locals move away, the Sparkeses have shifted into tourism mode, stocking up on beer and camping equipment for desert explorers. "We were the only store in Empire — and still are," Dana Sparkes said. The Wall Street Journal (tiered subscription model)/In Charge blog (7/18) - Leveraging the power of Google Places
When consumers are searching for your restaurant, odds are they're using Google to do it, which makes the search giant's social site Google Places an effective marketing and branding tool for franchises, says SociallyBuzz CEO and marketing chief Andre Kay. Places pages let franchises post status updates and responses to customer comments, and Google Places offers franchises easy options for local advertising. NRF News | | | | - NRF calls NLRB proposal on union elections "backdoor card check"
NRF and its chain restaurant division are voicing strong opposition as the National Labor Relations Board debates a proposal to implement a number of provisions similar to the controversial Employee Free Choice Act defeated in Congress four years ago. "Unions weren't able to get the Employee Free Choice Act through Congress, so they're using administrative procedures at the NLRB to turn as much of the bill into law as possible," NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. NCCR Executive Director Rob Green called the proposal "a job-killing solution in search of a problem." Read more. - NRF SmartStat: July 19, 2011

Chipotle's business model and record of strong sales growth have helped boost the company's share price to $320 since the stock debuted at $44 a share in 2006, but analysts say there's another factor at work. Eateries that target middle-income consumers with lunches in the $8 to $10 range are few, making chains that still have the potential for growth, including Chipotle and Panera, extremely attractive to investors.
