  • ConAgra bids $4.9 billion to acquire rival Ralcorp
ConAgra Foods said Wednesday it has increased its bid for private-label food manufacturer Ralcorp Holdings to $4.9 billion or $86 per share, up from an $82-per-share bid Ralcorp rejected in March. U.S. private-label sales have grown to 18.9% of total supermarket sales, up from 16.4% five years ago, and ConAgra estimates that the combined private-label revenue from the two companies would total about $4 billion annually. Coca-Cola, marking 125 years this week, has seen its stock rise 25% in the past year, as it posted a fourth quarter of growth in North America. • Green business practices are "win, win, win," says Unilever Canada VP
Unilever's green-business practices are "win, win, win," says John Coyne, Unilever Canada vice president and general counsel. Buying huge amounts of renewable energy and investing in waste management doesn't always come cheaply, but those investments pay immediate dividends on three fronts, Coyne says. "Our customers like us for doing the right thing, the environment likes us for running a sustainable business, and last but certainly not least, our shareholders like us because it reduces costs and increases profits," he explains. • Study questions guidelines on salt consumption
European researchers looked at data on almost 3,700 people and found that 4% of those with the lowest salt consumption died from cardiovascular disease, compared with 1% among those who had the highest intake, although consumption was not linked to a risk of heart and blood vessel disease. Dr. Jan Staessen, lead author of the study, which appears in the Journal of the American Medical Association, said the results don't back salt-intake guidelines, noting that lower salt consumption might have benefits but also adverse effects.
