  • Joe Fresh plans to open 20 stores in Canada
Joe Fresh, the clothing brand now sold in Loblaw superstores, plans four stand-alone stores this year in Canada, and eventually will open 20. The stores will help raise the profile of Joe Fresh and will be a test of its competitive ability, according to industry experts. • Merchants hope holiday gift cards boost January sales
Retailers hope to boost sales this month as shoppers redeem the gift cards they received in December, but some sources say redemption rates in January may fall compared to last year as more adults hang onto the plastic until the right bargain comes along. Merchants don't book gift cards as sales until they're redeemed. Gift cards "are of huge importance to retailers ... because it's a walking advertisement for the store," says NRF's Maureen Riehl. "It says, 'Please come and visit our store'... in a format that can fit in your wallet." USA TODAY (1/19) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Post-recession outfits do double duty
High-end designers and mainstream apparel merchants are creating more pieces that can be worn more than one way, to appeal to cost-conscious fashion fans looking to maintain a creative wardrobe. New offerings include Rachel Pally's $80 five-in-one dress at Target and a Victoria's Secret dress that doubles as a jumpsuit. • Call a CPA, then call your banker
Looking for a small-business loan? Research shows that an audit by a certified public accountant can significantly boost your chance of approval -- and decrease the cost of that capital. For an average-size loan of $3.3 million, audited businesses save about $23,000 because of lower interest rates, according to a study from the University of Chicago. • Don't turn off your brain when you hire a consultant
As a business owner, you're required to know a little bit about a lot, so when you bring in a consultant, you might be tempted to breathe a sigh of relief and assume you can leave the thinking to the pros. But Gladys Edmunds writes that that would be a mistake: "You are never wasting time when you are learning things that will take some of the complications out of reaching success in any area of your life."
