  • L'Oreal faces cultural challenges in cracking Brazilian market
L'Oreal, the world leader in beauty products, hasn't done well in the lucrative Brazilian market because consumers typically buy their products from door-to-door salespeople. L'Oreal hopes to bridge this sales gap by placing personal-beauty representatives in department stores. The company also is trying to develop products with more natural and local ingredients to better match local shoppers' tastes. The Wall Street Journal (1/21) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Independent bookstores retool their strategies
Independent bookstores, whose sales compose about 10% of the overall market, are creating websites that sell printed and electronic books at prices that rival those of Amazon and Barnes & Noble. The website launches are among the latest moves in an effort to survive in a rapidly changing industry. "We have to figure out how we stay in the game," said Beth Puffer, the director of the Bank Street Bookstore in New York City. "You have to rethink your whole business model because the old ways really aren't going to cut it anymore." The New York Times (free registration) (1/23) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Fast-fashion brands break new ground in the U.S.
Apparel chains including Sweden's H&M, Spain's Zara and Japan's Uniqlo have been expanding their presences in the U.S. and winning fans to their fast-fashion retail models. The moves have spurred U.S. department and specialty merchants to step up their game, analysts say, including J.C. Penney, which introduced European fast-fashion brand MNG by Mango last fall. The line, set to roll out in 600 stores this year, introduces new looks twice a month. Investor's Business Daily (1/21) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Urban malls revitalize as more merchants head for cities
Many chain stores are pulling back from suburban development in favor of opening urban stores, a trend that's paying off for city-based shopping centers and districts that have invested in recent makeovers, said one retail real estate expert. An extensive face-lift has paid off for Westfield Culver City mall, whose 10 million visitors last year represented a 90% increase from 2009. • Firehouse Subs CEO: Growth hinges on excellence, more choices
It appears, at first glance, that the number of existing U.S. restaurants exceeds demand and leaves little room for new players, writes Firehouse Subs CEO Don Fox. The key to growth, he writes, is to give consumers a reason to dine out more often, by focusing on excellence and creating dining options they can't find anywhere else.
