- What's in store for retail in 2012?
New technologies including digital voice technology and the continued growth of mobile and social will drive rapid changes in the retail industry next year, STORES Magazine predicts. Also on tap: more partnerships between retailers and vendors and even rival merchants, as the industry strives to keep up with changing consumer demands. The average consumer plans to spend about 22% more on holiday shopping this year than last, but the majority of them won't use credit cards or incur other forms of debt to pay for their purchases, according to a CNBC survey. Among the other findings: people who believe their home values will increase plan to spend more, and 74% plan to enter 2012 free from holiday debt.
