  • Chicago's "food deserts" attract more grocers
Grocery aisles in Chicago's most under-served neighborhoods rose 11% in the past two years, but there's still a scarcity of fresh food options in some of these "food deserts," according to a study by Mid-America Real Estate Corp. In the city as a whole, full-service grocers including Dominick's and Jewel-Osco lost space, while discounters including Aldi and Save-A-Lot gained, and gourmet grocers such as Trader Joe's and Whole Foods opened nine new stores in the two-year period.
