  • UK throws retailers "lifeline" in aftermath of riots
The British Retail Consortium said that the retail rescue package announced recently by Prime Minister David Cameron will help many shops get back on their feet in the wake of the recent riots. The package includes a temporary suspension of business rates and council tax for some retailers. It also allows retailers more time to make insurance claims. "The Prime Minister has listened to our pleas and satisfied the majority of them," said Stephen Robertson, director-general of the BRC. "The Government has shown great willingness to work with retailers to put our streets back together." The Telegraph (London) (11 Aug.) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Court rules against Louboutin over shoes' red soles
Christian Louboutin wants the exclusive right to use red soles on his shoes, but in a victory for Yves Saint Laurent, a New York court ruled against the French footwear king. US District Judge Victor Marrero ruled that other shoe manufacturers could put red soles on their shoes. "Because in the fashion industry color serves ornamental and aesthetic functions vital to robust competition, the court finds that Louboutin is unlikely to be able to prove that its red outsole brand is entitled to trademark protection," Marrero said.
