  • Australian consumers could face higher prices, Choice says
    Choice, the consumer advocacy group, says that shoppers in Australia could see higher prices for produce, fashion and other purchases because of a change in Eftpos transaction fees. Eftpos Payments Australia is preparing to shift the interchange fees to retailers' banks from consumers' banks. "Some retailers, potentially the small retailers who are less able to absorb the cost, may pass that fee on to the consumer, but we won't know until this comes into play," said Ingrid Just, a spokeswoman for Choice.     Hennes & Mauritz saw its July like-for-like sales drop 6%, hit by weak consumer sentiment in Europe. The figure represented the largest monthly sales decline for H&M in more than a year. "Comparatives are tough while economic conditions are tough across Europe -- and will perhaps get worse," said Anne Critchlow, an analyst at Societe Generale, who noted that the data was disappointing.   • U.S. retail sales for July increase as consumers show resilience
    Despite concerns that consumers would begin pulling back on their spending, the back-to-school season started with a bang as U.S. consumers hit the stores in July to take advantage of promotions on apparel, electronics and school supplies. Retail industry sales in July increased 0.3 percent seasonally adjusted from the previous month and 4.0 percent unadjusted year-over-year, according to NRF.
