  • Macy's to invest millions to renovate Chicago store
Macy's will renovate the the first three floors of its eight-level Water Tower location on Chicago's Magnificent Mile, investing to take the highest-traffic areas from dated decor to a bright contemporary look with ceramic floors, white walls and silver accents. • Big Y launches $20 customer loyalty card
Grocery store chain Big Y has rolled out an upgraded customer loyalty card at all 58 of its stores, which offers shoppers deeper discounts in exchange for a $20 annual membership fee. The company says the concept was a success during a six-store test, but some industry watchers say the chain is taking a big risk. "You're asking people to shift from a reward, which is given as a thank you, to prepaying for a discount. It's different," said one industry expert. • Retailers reverse stock-trimming strategy to bring back shoppers
During the downturn, retail chains including Wal-Mart and Walgreens trimmed their product selections to cut costs and eliminate slower-selling items and brands. Now, the chains are reversing course as they hear from a growing number of shoppers angry that their stores no longer stock their favorite lipsticks and other beauty products. "The SKU-reduction process was definitely a learning experience. Much of it was valid and needed, but mistakes were made," said Kathy Steirly, a consultant who was at Walgreens during some of the editing. • Companies revamp ads to appeal to young consumers
Merchants are remaking their fashion advertisements with photos of celebrities and sports stars aimed at capturing the attention of teens they hope will both spread positive brand messages via social media and become long-term loyal customers. "Depending on what you sell, if your teen customer is loyal to your brand, you could create a lifetime relationship if you're good to them," said Shop.org's Larry Joseloff. • Retailers emphasize urgency for online promos
Limited-time offers such as daily deals from Groupon and LivingSocial are helping retailers profit from consumers' love of discounts. The promotions are effective because they create a sense of urgency, retail experts say. The tactic is becoming more common as retailers look for ways to attract shoppers who are becoming accustomed to lower prices. USA TODAY (4/1) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
