  • Borders requests more time to review 92 store leases
Borders asked a bankruptcy court judge this week for more time to evaluate the performance of 92 stores before it makes the decision whether to renew or reject the leases. The bookseller, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in February, has already announced plans to close 227 stores nationwide but expects to assume most of the leases on the 92 stores under review, a spokeswoman said. • Retailers scramble to keep up with societies' shifting values
Swedish furniture retailer IKEA recently took heat in Italy for an ad campaign that appeared to endorse gay marriage, and retail chains in the U.S. have received similar flak for appearing to take a stand on controversial social issues. "By and large what retailers do is ultimately take the cue from their customers and try to keep their finger on the pulse," says NRF's Scott Krugman. "Retailers don't take these decisions lightly. Passions run deep." SmartMoney.com/Pay Dirt blog (4/25) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Q-and-A: The rise of in-store marketing
Retailers are investing in in-store marketing campaigns that move beyond traditional point-of-sale signage as smartphone-armed shoppers use their gadgets to access product information and compare prices, says Dina Howell, who spent 22 years marketing P&G products. The biggest mistake marketers are making, she says, is creating different campaigns for different media rather than promoting a consistent message across all channels. • Philadelphia airport comes to resemble a mall
Philadelphia International airport boasts 165 stores, restaurants and other concessions, up from just 22 in 1994. Airport officials say they are constantly moving to upgrade their retail offerings as leases expire and there are opportunities to bring in new tenants. The airport is the latest example of a nationwide trend to improve the quality of -- and revenue from -- airport concessions. The Philadelphia Inquirer (4/24) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Mall owners try to improve shopping experience via apps
Simon Property Group, Westfield Group and Glimcher Realty Trust are among the major mall operators that are trying out applications with navigational tools and sale and discount offers. Simon uses Shopkick's app in about half of its 338 U.S. locations and is working on its own version with group discounts, and Westfield in 2010 launched an app for its 55 U.S. locations, while Glimcher is aiming to roll out its version in time for back-to-school shopping. • Popeyes expansion plan banks on existing franchisees
Popeyes is romancing existing franchisees rather than courting new ones as it seeks to expand in existing markets and add new ones, says development vice president Greg Vojnovic. About 75% of the chicken chain's growth comes from operators already in the system. "Most companies, from what I'm aware of, recruit many new franchisees and put new blood in their pipeline. We like folks that have invested their time and wealth into the pipeline." QSRWeb.com (4/25) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
