Katie Bayne, president of sparkling beverages at Coca-Cola, said "obesity is a critical health challenge," but limiting sales of sweetened drinks, as proposed by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, is not the answer. "There is no scientific evidence that connects sugary beverages to obesity," she said. A study looking at data from more than 200,000 participants raises questions about the link between sugar and high blood pressure, finding that consumption of drinks sweetened with sugar and with artificial sweetener both lead to higher blood pressure. "These associations may be mediated by factors common to both sugar-sweetened beverages and artificially sweetened ... but are unlikely to be due to fructose," researchers said. Drinking about three cups of coffee per day may delay the onset or reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease in elderly people with mild cognitive impairment, according to a study published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease.
