- Safeway decides to phase out caged pork
Safeway said it will stop sourcing pork from suppliers that cage pregnant hogs, a practice considered inhumane by animal-rights groups. Though Safeway said the shift will take a "long period," the announcement prompted praise from the Humane Society of the United States and concern from the National Pork Producers Council. "It seems that Safeway was intimidated by an animal-rights group whose ultimate goal is the elimination of food-animal production," council President R.C. Hunt said.
