  • GFS Marketplace expands with new Florida warehouse stores
GFS Marketplace has opened its first Florida store and has plans for several more in the state. The chain, which historically has supplied restaurants while also selling bulk items to consumers, operates 144 U.S. stores and, unlike other warehouse clubs, it doesn't charge a membership fee. The move comes as warehouse club sales are on the rise -- revenue jumped 4% to 370.8 billion last year, according to NRF data. Orlando Sentinel (Fla.) (9/4) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Fresh & Easy bets on small-format stores
Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, the Tesco banner that has opened 11 stores in the Bay Area since March and is planning more, is betting on small-format stores that offer discounted traditional groceries, as well as specialty and prepared items. It is also focusing on communities that don't have supermarkets, or where residents have few fresh-food choices. The Bay Citizen (San Francisco) (9/3) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Retailers debut Christmas ads in September mags
Many retailers are moving aggressively to woo holiday shoppers with full-scale marketing campaigns, some of which bow this week. As evidence of this full-steam-ahead approach, the article notes that September's Real Simple magazine will include ads from no less than a dozen retailers, while Coldwater Creek, which specializes in apparel favored by older women, will unveil its first national TV campaign to highlight its fall fashions. • With Labor Day over, retailers ring in the holidays: More merchants are dressing up their windows in tinsel and garland in September, and retail experts say it's because shoppers want to get a head start on the holidays. "While we won't see retailers fully deck the halls until November, there is definite demand from their shoppers to bring out the holiday decor as early as September," said NRF spokeswoman Kathy Grannis. • Survey: Retailers may take a conservative approach to holiday hiring: About two-thirds of retailers surveyed recently said they expect to hire about the same number of seasonal workers during the holidays as they did last year, despite forecasts for higher sales, according to a new survey. • "Buy American" movement gets a second wind
Roger Simmermaker wears New Balance sneakers, drives a Lincoln and literally wrote the book on how Americans can buy more products made in the U.S. Now, others are joining the movement as consumers come to realize the benefits of supporting U.S. manufacturing, and Simmermaker supplements his 1996 book on the subject with a free guide detailing more than 2,500 American-made products from retailers including Dillard's, Home Depot and Costco.
